Project Overview

This project is an international architectural design competition for the construction of a national-level Indigenous Peoples Museum. The aim is to create a contemporary museum grounded in Indigenous perspectives, integrating exhibition, research, education, and public engagement functions. Beyond presenting Indigenous cultures and histories, the museum emphasizes Indigenous peoples as cultural subjects and active agents of knowledge, fostering plural narratives, community participation, and cross-cultural dialogue.
The museum is envisioned as a key platform connecting the Indigenous peoples of Taiwan with Indigenous communities worldwide. It responds to contemporary museum practices that foreground decolonial perspectives, cultural rights, and the co-production of knowledge, and seeks to establish an Indigenous cultural institution with both international outlook and strong public relevance.
The competition vision encourages proposals that emerge from the site’s environmental context, landscape conditions, and land-based narratives, developing an integrated spatial strategy that resonates with nature and the surrounding environment. Designers are invited to consider how architecture can function as a public realm that is continuously used, interpreted, and redefined by communities over time. The design outcome should demonstrate a comprehensive response to cultural diversity, publicness, and long-term adaptability, rather than relying on a singular architectural style or symbolic expression.
